'Love Knot'
Can you recall when we first met
With hope and dreams we strove to get
Bombed out of London Town, so what
With one gold band we tied the knot.
We traipsed the country far and wide
Our fibre suitcase sorely tired.
The war was over the knot still held
Another chapter of life to weld.
We settled down with a baby of one,
A golden-haired girl, now herself a mum.
The road has been long, skies grey and blue,
But the knot has no meaning since I have lost you.
'Today'
I went to London town
50 years on since War's D-day
Armed with my railcard, a breakaway treat,
I stepped on the train to my favourite seat.
How and why I survived, I never will know
Job for nine years, were asked to go
So munitions it was
In May 1940, on duty bombed London Blitz well away.
My friend had a car and found the right shelter
And through chaos so tragic,
Got out helter skelter.
When reporting for duty after three days on leave
Transfers to out stations for us on reprieve.
When told you are for - blank
My heart in my feet
Oh no said I stating another retreat
Surrounded by escorts,
Top secret key men,
Found myself in the chair
To supply some more gen.
Innocently stated my fiance was there
If I had to leave home, why not join him elsewhere.
His work was on factories all over our isles,
Chosen skilled men were all needed (government files)
Of course missed out on the financial glory
Granted permission to work at any war factory.
