My grandparents lived through ww2 in a mining village outside Durham in the North East of England. They have over many years told me about the war years and I would like to tell you this story first.
There was a heavy air raid over Sunderland and the enemy planes were caught in the search lights. The ack ack guns were firing rapidly at these planes when one was shot and desended in flames to the ground. There was a loud cheer from those who had emerged out of their Anderson shelters, but my grandmother did not cheer but said that some mothers in Germany would tomorrow be grieving the loss of a son, the loss of thier child.
Even in the midst of war there was still time for compassion.
