Because the wide, shallow Blackwater Estuary - off Mersea Island was considered to be an obvious landing beach during invasion threat 1940-1941, it was mined and fenced off.
(Traced of barbed wire have been found just recently (2003)by a writer at St Peters Well).
Sadly when a local dog went out for his/her frolick along a lovely clear beach - BANG!
I can remember being in my grandparents garden and hearing the explosion.
