In 1945 I was a Private in the Highland Light Infantry.
We were sent to Germany on an old passenger steamer and we had to sleep on the deck. There were hundreds of us and it was cold. However we found somewhere to sleep inside, under the desk of the Purser, so it was better than being outside in the wind. This was during November 1944.
There was a flying bomb base in Dreswell, nr Rhiner.
I remember being shot in the groin area by a German during an attack. I was just about the step over a telephone wire and was standing on one leg, when I got shot. I was taken to a German farmhouse and the stretcher bearers asked the farmer to make us a cup of tea. A couple of days later I had an operation to remove the bullet. The operation took place in the crypt of a monastery.
When I came round from the operation I was taken to Lille in France. It took me 2 years to recover. I was 19 years old when I went into hospital and nearly 22 when I came out.
