I was only a child when I heard that George, who was my father's cousin, had been killed in a crash which was not related to combat. His father gave me some of George's books, which I appreciated very much. I heard nothing more about him until a few years ago when I found his name in a book about the Battle of Britain, in the list of combatants.
I did not have enough enough information for RAF Innsworth to help me. The next break came when I had access to the Internet and someone told me about Commonwealth War Graves site. I now had his name, rank and service number, and with these RAF Innsworth were helpful.
He went through the phoney war, Battle for France, Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain after which 17 Squadron was sent to Tain, Scotland, before going to Catterick for R & R in preparation for transfer to the Far East. While at Tain, on 23rd October 1941, he was followed on takeoff by another Hurricane which ran into the back of him. Both pilots were killed.
Ihave read quite a few books in which the exploits of 17 Squadron have been mentioned. I would be great if there was someone who could provide more news of him.
