Although I have never managed to get back to the originator at the time, I have heard it said a number of times that there was no prior knowledge that the Coventry blitz of 14th November 1940 was about to happen.
This is DEFINITELY incorrect.
It is possible not very many people knew, I am assuming it was the government that knew and advised the Coventry council of the fact.
We lived on the outskirts of Coventry and my father was a senior civil servant at the time and worked in the Council House.
On the night in question he took our family into the Council House and we spent the night in the cellars beneath the Council House with a number of other families, all senior council employees.
I have long since assumed this location was considered the safest place to be. We certainly emerged totally unscathed the following morning.
