My mother was a war bride from Belgium with the First World War. When the Second World War started she had no contact with her family, so we heard about the Red Cross which was in Stanley Street, Liverpool. They helped us alot. They told us to write letters and send photographs of her family, and they would make sure that the family in Belgium would recieve them, which they did. My mother wanted to help the Red Cross in some way so they asked her to be an interpreter to help the refugees as they arrived by ship from Belgium. The police used to call to the house at all hours in the night and take her to the dock as the ships arrived so that she could help the people be placed in Church Halls around Liverpool until they found houses for them to stay in.
On one of the ships there were two ladies who were stewardesses. My mother brought them to stay with us and they were very happy with us at the time. We lived in Alexandra Road, Crosby. When the time came for them to go back to Belgium, they were picked up and taken to the ship. As they got near to the Belgian coast, the ship hit a mine and they were both killed- they never got back to their homes again.
