The Gripper Medal awarded to Cprl.R.C. Taylor for his outstandingly "gripping" stories.

During WW2 my father (Corporal Taylor, army No. 2329892) was nick-named "Gripper" on account of the "gripping" fictional tales he would make up and recount to amuse his mates and while away rest time.

His comrades made for him a painted cardboard medal in honour of his 'achievements' in story telling.

More than 60 years on, the picture on the medal has faded a little, but it shows what else occupied the young soldiers' minds... (see photograph attached). The medal is about 7cm x 2.5cm in size.

Message 1 - Unique Medal

Posted on: 29 May 2005 by Trooper Tom Canning - WW2 Site Helper

Reginald -

That story of your Father doesn't surprise me as the whole battalion were good at telling tales to the Brigadier that - "OH dear we can't fight to-day as we have some mud on our tracks and wish to be excused "!

Just joking Reg, as they did their share of it - as we all did - BUT we didn't call them "GoldenTracks " for nothing !
You are about the second from the 48th RTR to put in an appearance along with Trooper Geoff who comes on now and again.Relatives from 12RTR and only me from the 145th RAC.
That medal must have been presented at Bone where the boredom was a mile high... and we would all go a long way to hear a good tale !
But we did have some fun as well, like the time the Marines came by - and turned over a Churchill Tank...we needed you Father there for a good tale when the Squadron Leaders asked
....
Have a look at my tale "Tunisia 1943"
you will see what I mean !
best regards
tomcan
ex 145th
