I lived at Illogan Highway, at Rounding Walls. The thing I remember is looking out of the window and seeing men marching with guards. I asked what they were doing and my dad said they were Italian prisoners. This went on each morning and evening (they were working at the mine) and they had to get to the prison camp near Truro. As youngsters, we thought of them as the enemy, and sometimes the youngsters would boo.
Another day many G.I.'s arrived in army lorries, they were all black - this was new to us. They would leave in the morning from Illogan singing and come back at night. This went on for a few weeks and then one morning they were gone; we then heard about D.Day.
After the war we had a big party at the school field, with us were some of our prisoners of war they were given a huge welcome and we had a big photograph taken in a big V and they were sitting in the front.
