We lived in a three storey house with a basement. The Government reinforced the basement and winestore with iron girders and bunks and this became our shelter. I hardly ever slept in it because the adjults made too much noise and it was hard to sleep. Dad reinforced our bedroom windows with sandbags so we would not get hit with broken glass. I was first evacuated to Guildford to a business lady who just left me to my own devices, so I was removed and temporarily put in a children's home until Dad could collect me. Later me, my older sister, younger brother and Dad went on a train to Norfolk, and a policeman knocked on doors to try and find us shelter for the night. Eventually a lady took us in and I remember she gave us a boiled egg for breakfast. I was then sent on to a farm and my sister and brother went somewhere else. It was good, I loved it but was not there long and then I was back home. We went to school and a doodlebug fell during the dinner hour and the school was shut because they were digging people out of the houses that had been hit and the school had some broken windows. I watched the doodlebug I thought it was exciting. I am glad I was not a mother at that time, they sent their children away to strangers not knowing if they would ever see them again, my Mum and Dad were my heroes. I don't think I ever told them that, I wish I had.
