Terry joined the Navy when he was 18 and was sent to HMS Raleigh at Tor Point in Cornwall. This was a shore based training establishment which was regularly bombed by the Germans. Terry remembers two huts being hit one night with 70 plus men being killed.
He trained as a torpedo man and was posted to HMS Richmond, a destroyer sailing out of Halifax, Nova Scotia on escort duties. Their job was to escort convoys leaving America to half way across the Atlantic where a new escort from Britain would take over.
For all the horrors and hardships of the Atlantic there were some lighter moments. Terry saw Frank Sinatra at the Globe Theatre in Boston. Terry climbed the Empire State Building in New York. Terry also met the champion boxer Jack Dempsey at his bar in New York.
During the course of his duties Terry acquired a dog, Monty who accompanied him on board ship. One day during a routine torpedo inspection mid Atlantic, Monty fell overboard. The Skipper of the ship turned back and Terry was able to drag poor Monty from the sea, none the worse for his experience.
