It was 1943 and I was living in a house in Portsmouth with 19 other girls who were also with the WRNS (Women's Royal Navy Service). The air raid warden had been around to tell us to stay indoors as news was going around about a possible air raid that day. None of us were really worried about the air raid and I was just sitting on the couch, trying to relax myself with a book, when, suddenly I was thrown to the floor by an explosion behind me. The blast ripped through our house, shattering all the windows and blowing things off the walls, glass shards had been shot like bullets into the opposite walls from the force of the explosion. The blast was so loud my ears felt numb as I got up off the floor to have a look around. A bomb had been dropped directly on the house behind us. Fortunately there wasn't anyone in that house and neither myself nor the other girls in our house were injured
