Entered in late 1941 aged 18-1/2. Enlisted in Dover Street, Manchester, posted to Lancaster then Oswestry. Were formed into a battery, 568. here then posted to Whitby firing camp. In 1942 went to London as a relief battery moving all round London as Doodlebugs and various types of aircraft were active. This lasted till February, 1945 and became radar operator on ack-ack. Then volunteered for move. Posted to Belgium and was in Antwerp till May, 1945. Was then moved to Hamburg supervising German labour and stayed till March 1946. Was demobbed at Ashton Baracks in Manchestr. During service, Mary Churchill was one of the officers untill joining her father at Potsdam.
While in Hamburg, decorated the guard tent with with wild flowers, but when the orderley officer asked what the idea was - told him war was over - he replied "not for you" and had to take them down. Also while in Hamburg,one weekend confined to baracks on a spit and polish everthing. Next day paraded in a local field when an aircraft landed and Monty stepped out on inspection!
