My earliest memory was when I was four and a half years old and a doodlebug was dropped. I was being pulled from under the rubble that had fallen onto the beds in the bedroom that I shared with my brother Brian.
Mumwas calling us to hurry up as we had to get out. Itwas pitch dark and there was lots of dust in the room. Mum lead us to the bedroom door and when we got to the landing there was no staircase just a pile of rubble. Our dad was standing at the bottom of the stairs waiting to catch us. Somebody came to help us out and we were carried down the backways of Taunton Road to the communial shelter. From there we were taken to Southfleet road School where the teachers came to help us. The next time I saw my brother Brian after the bombing I thought how dirty he looked, not realising that I was just as dirty. Some of the people killed that night were going to be evacuated the next day.
