Christmas 1946, just after the war, I was six years old and there was a huge national campaign throughout the schools in Britain for everyone to donate there sweet rations to children in Germany. We were given about 2oz of sweets a week so we donated a couple of week鈥檚 rations. I remember my Aunty came home on leave that Christmas; she had been working in Germany as a civilian administrator for the British Army of the Rhine occupation force. She brought us back a box of chocolates that lasted us until the following summer, it was so ironic.
