I was in the 4/7th Royal Dragoon Guards, serving in Holland between Nijmegen and Arnheim. We were outside our tank and were subjected to heavy mortar fire. We did not have time to get back into the tank so we dived under it for protection. Three out of the five crew were wounded, including our officer. The officer asked me to run back and get help. I ran back to where I had noticed a medical unit. Then I went back to the tank and within minutes the stretcher bearers arrived and they took away the wounded. I never saw the three men again as about three weeks later I was badly wounded and was invalided back to England. I spent three months in hospital and was invalided out on April 13th 1945. the war ended three weeks after that.
