I remember in 1942 when the Germans were dropping incendiary bombs. One night one dropped on the Hither Green sidings and set a wagon alight. We had to unhook it from the train and pull it up to the water crane to put out the fire. I didn't know at the time but I was later told that it was full of ammunition and highly explosive. Later in the war in 1944 during the night a doodlebug fell in the C-section part of the sidings. It blew one of the wagons to pieces. I went to have a look the next morning and found a hole as big as a doubledecker bus but no-one had been injured.
