This story was submitted to the People's War site by Louise Angell of the CSV Action Desk at 大象传媒 Radio Derby, on behalf of Elizabeth Rankin. The author understands the sites terms and conditions.
When the war started I was working in a foundry in Derby making mowers. This changed to munitions - 10/12 inch mortars and hand grenades. We worked long hours and were expected to do shifts at night and weekends too. I didn't really like the idea of what we were doing as I know these weapons would go on to kill someone. If one job dried up in the factory we would be put on another. We all mucked in. We had a shelter there that we would have to use if the sirens went. The war meant more women went to work which gave us more freedom.
