As a lad in the war I came home from school during an air raid. As I walked indoors Mum said 'nip round to Grandad's house,a land mine has dropped in the road'. I ran round to where his house was and it had been all but flattened, except for the outside toilet.
Luckily Grandad was in there hollering and shouting with the ARP and firemen forcing the door open to get him out.As was typical of Grandad he saw the funny side of it and started laughing. One of the firemen asked him what he was laughing at,and Grandad said,'All I did was pull the chain and the blinking house fell down'. Grandad drank many a free pint on that tale, which I can verify was true.
