This was my fathers story.
He was a teenager, still at school, during the war and lived in Wallasey.
The only fruit available was apples, in season, and all children were desparate for any alternative.
Imagine his and many of his friends delight when they saw hundreds of grapefruits - a fruit that was just a distant memory - floating in the oily waters at the docks - they rushed down to rescue as many as possible, but - bitter result - everyone was waterlogged and full of salt, completely inedible.
He surmised later that the Cargo ship bringing them must have been torpedoed just outside the docks
He was born in 1929 [died 1989] so this must have been about 1942/3
