As a young girl at the time, I'll never forget my first memory after war was declared. The first thing that comes into my mind is when they gathered all the men and women who were too old for the army to join the ARP. Now, my best friend at the time's family owned the local bakery which had a dancehall below. Here the ARP had to train and practice their manoeuvres. The best thing was when they trained outside because their training involved obstacle courses and jumping over garden walls. Bearing in mind that they were all too old for the army, most of them didn't stand a chance! Witnessing the humiliation of my respected elders in public like this was a great experience, and certainly something that I'll never forget!
