One day we were watching a convoy of about eighteen or twenty ships going along the coast and we had a real sense of excitement. We knew it was something out of the ordinary because there were so many of them. The American soldiers with whom we had been so friendly over the past twelve months also suddenly disappeared.
When DDay happened, a couple of days later, with so many ships and so many people, we thought that we had to win the war. With so many people being landed surely this had to be the turning point of the war. So it turned out to be.
