My grandfather, Jack, spent much of his time in St. Margarets Bay, Dover, on standby. During this time he was working on repairs to MGBs (motor gun boats), MASBs (motor anti-sub boats) and motor launches. In order to keep themselves occupied he, and his colleagues, spent much of their time making things from scrap wood and other materials. Often they made walking sticks, broaches and other trinkets, some of which they gave away to the troops.
My grandfather was on weekend duty, on standby, having worked on the repair/refit of a tug-boat. Sat in the wheel-house of the tug, he made a cribbage board. The holes for the pegs were drilled with a wheel-brace, and this inlay was made from box-wood. A diamond, heart, club and spade were carved out and the wood coloured with red and black respectively. These were inlaid with some perspex which my grandfather had somehow acquired from the tail-lights of a shot-down German plane!
My grandfather recently gave us this cribbage board, complete with the story of how it was made.
