I was a Wren during the war, stationed in Plymouth.
One night, as I was walking home, a US army jeep stopped and the driver offered me a lift. The driver, Tony, took me home, and we arranged to meet the following evening for a drink.
Three days later, we were in love with each other. On my birthday, he gave me a cake with the message "Happy Birthday, Bubbles. I love you" written on it.
Tony was with the Ist American Army, stationed in Marsh Mills in Plymouth. Three weeks after our love affair began, he sent me a letter saying he was being sent to France.
I received another letter from Tony, written whilst on the boat going to France. He said he could hear gunfire in the distance. It was the last I heard from him. I believe his company was wiped out.
I gave birth to a son, nine months after meeting Tony, who I named after his dad. Sadly, I lost Tony last year. But the memory lives on.
