One night I was waiting outside a tube station on the South side, I wished to get over to the North side, there was an air raid going on and the flood gates on the tube were closed, of course.
I was hanging around, wondering what to do when a man - a complete stranger - asked me whether I wanted to cross over. I said yes - he said so do I, and grabbed my hand. We dashed across the bridge, bombs falling, searchlights beaming and AA guns firing. We both fell into the tube station entrance, breathless and trembling - I was anyway. I said, very politely, "thank you very much". That was that, we both went our own ways.
