I was an air raid warden - that was something. We had a big block of flats and when we were on duty we were on the roof. I remember the awful air raids. You could see the planes coming in the distance. It was awful. We had to tell everyone to make sure they were sheltering.
On VE Day I had flu and was in bed. I was listening to the radio and heard that the war was over. I felt that I must get up - flu or no flu. I went to Piccadilly, where there was great excitement. Some people were bathing in the water!
Then I had to go back. I was living in St John's Wood and there was no transport - no taxis - nothing. I had to walk very slowly, virtually crawl, back to St. John's Wood.
