Feb. 2nd 1941

This morning it was light earlier than usual and the sun was really shining when I let the chickens out. Eggs are going down again on Monday. I don't know how we are going to pay for corn, the funny thing is when we were getting plenty of eggs the price went up, now they don't lay so many the price is going down. This country always did do things arse way about.
Benny was windy this morning because there was no steak for breakfast. He seems to forget there is a war on and that we are rationed.. We had sausage meat, the skins are missing as they come from the U.S.A. Breakfast in this house is a messy meal, the teapot on the go from 7 in the morning 'till dinner time, dirty cups standing about the table and sideboard, makes me feel cross, I hate muddle.
We were just thinking aboout dinner when in walked Ian J., Jean's former young man. He is in the army now and is big and fine and he weighs 14 stone and is 20 years old. We were very pleased to see him and he stayed to dinner. He was lucky as we had chicken, it is not much of a change for to have visitors as we have always got someone here.
We have a new moon tonight, I wonder if we will get more night raids, we had 12 nights out of 13 free so we had some sleep. It is now 4.30.p.m. so I must soon do my chores.

Had the ration coupons for my chickens come last Saturday and they are allowed 1 cwt a month. At present they get this a week, looks as if they are going to have a lean time to come, imagine chickens being rationed.
We had two raids this week, one last night was hot while it lasted, our guns turned one jerry and he threw out his bombs at Grays, no one was hurt thank goodness, so far tonight there is no raid so far.

Just got bathed and dressed when the sirens went but did't hear anything about except spitfires our own planes. The all clear has just gone 1/4 hour later.
Mr. Churchill's speech was grand and very cheering, I was pleased ddto hear his voice. I wouldn't miss it for anything, it was heard the world over, he warned the neutrals not to trust Hitler, anyway we have turned the corner.

Had a letter from Nanny [Tritton who worked at Ford Place, a large country house across the meadows] who has gone to New York, U.S.A. for the duration of war. I guess it sure is better for the children out of air raids in this bomb battered part of the country, also had two letters from my friends in Canada and Lucy had been very well but the U.....S were fine.
n.b. Blanche migrated to Canada after the first world war but later came back to the u.k.

The evenings are pulling out now, the chickens won't go in to be shut up 'till after tea and I believe it is because the hour wqasn't taken off this year. It is never dark till 5.2. instead of 4.20p.m.. I prefer the hour taken off, seems like winter, even now it isn't light till 8 o clock.

See in the papers Lord Woolton? is going to take 3d off eggs again but price for food does
n't go down. It's bad enough for people who do it for a side line not alone for those who have to get a living from it.34

We sure have had visitors today one after another keep coming. First it was the manager fo the NAAFI and his wife, then Mr and Mrs Tritton called then just getting tea ready when who should walk in but Benny's relation from Romford. They stayed to tea and have jsut gone home before the blackout and the air raid siren has just gone. We had an air raid every night this week. Last night bombs were dropped all round the district. Last night one bomb knocked 6 houses down and 1 person was killed and 7 unexploded bombs dropped 80 yards from my mother's house. It put the wind up them, they got under the table when they came down.
