My father served in the war for the whole 6 years and was rescued from Dunkirk by a minesweeper. He was on the beaches for many hours and finding that they'd only moved a few yards when the morning came. He saw some collegues drown through carrying too much equipment and so decided to leave as much equipment behind as possible. After swimming towards the minesweeper he was picked up and brought to England. When reaching Dover he was put onto a train with other soldiers, not knowing where they were going. Eventually he recognised the landscape and realised he would go through Warwick Station. As his family lived in Warwick and his family didn't know whether he was dead or alive, he wrote a messge on an empty cigarette packet, saying "I am safe and well in England - Stan" and addressed it to 18 Commercial Buildings, Warwick. He tied it to an apple core and threw it out of the window while going through the station and a porter took it to the address, which was a neighbours address as he knew his wife would be staying in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, with her parents. The neighbour sent a telegram to my mother so she got the message.
In the meantime he did the same at Banbury Station and the police brought the message to her at Chipping Norton.
There were great celebrations and much relief!
