My uncle Augustas, whose middle name was Carole (he was always known as this) - he was at the battle for Tobruk, in the midddle east. He was attacked from the air by the luftwaffe and his left arm was shot off. I don`t know the full details, but my mum told me he was shipped to South Africa to recover from his wounds, and they were told he was missing in action. And after many months he turned up on my mums and nans doorstep - you can only imagine their surprise and joy at the sight of him. As a kid he was a great uncle, and would box your ears with his stump. He could do most things with one hand, and was very self reliant. I only found out after his death that he was in fact left handed, and had to learn to do everything with his less favoured hand.
