In October 1944 I was drafted with a party of SBA鈥檚 to an L.C.T at Ostend. The tank deck was fitted out with medical equipment and stretchers. On November 1st we set sail for the river Schsldt. We were supposed to beach at Westkapelle on Walcheren in order to bring casualties off. While we were waiting for orders we tied up to another ship in order to take some wounded off. While we were doing this there was an explosion. Our ship was damaged so the beaching plan was abandoned. We witnessed many landing craft sunk. The sea was rough and cold. We picked up as many survivors as we could, but many were left to drown. I still feel a terrible sick feeling when I think about it. On returning to Ostend we were drafted to Antwerp. There we set up Sick Quarters in the Belgelei. During the next few months we suffered attack by V1 and V2 rockets. I stayed in Antwerp for a year.
