When I was 5 we used to have to go down to an air-raid shelter beneath a grass bank. We weren鈥檛 issued with gas masks but all the schoolchildren had to do drills to make sure they could get into the shelters in time when the sirens went. However, one night there was a raid but we could not get down the shelter because it was flooded with water, and even when it was not flooded the shelters were very damp! Another time my 18 year old brother got caught outside the shelter in a raid and was hit on the back of the neck by a piece of shrapnel. Luckily he survived and was not even heavily wounded. However, I don鈥檛 have many memories of the war because I was so young.
