In 1939 I was evacuated with my sister from Brixton Hill to my aunt鈥檚 in Gamston, near Nottingham. The village consisted of a small church and a tiny shop. The school was a house with a large room where about a dozen children between the ages of five and eleven were taught by one very elderly lady. We returned home where I attended New Park Road School again until I was 14. I was then employed at the Admiralty in Whitehall.
My parent鈥檚 home was damaged by a firebomb. We ended up sleeping in the beer cellar of the local pub with eight other families.
