We used to live in a small house in Queens road.
When the air raids went off we would go in to our shelters in the back yard.
We came out of our shelter to find that our house had been bombed. During the confusion we thought that out uncle had been killed during the bombing and tried to find him. Suddenly one of the coal lids leading to the coal cellars popped open and our uncle came out with out any major injuries. I know that the fact he was in the cellar at the time of the bombing saved his life.
My father used to be a shelter marshal. He had about a dozen shelters to check on during the air raids. He would go to each one and check that everyone was okay and if they needed anything.
I remember watching the dog fights when I was five. They use to send spotter plans to check on the bombing and if one of our planes saw them a air fight would start.
