I started in the 11th Royal Tank Regiment and was in France in 1944. We went to back up the troops on 6th June, two and a half weeks after D-Day. We were holed up in Normandy. Troops broke up after Normandy in August 1944. In November 1944 we were trained on assault craft (had used gun tanks). This training allowed us to take troops to the Dutch Islands to allow access for cargo, ammunition ships and back-up troops. We had successful missions on two islands, South Beveland and Walteran. The Rhine Crossing took place in March 1945. Early April 1945 saw troops take Arhnem- Canadian troops joined the Brits. As the Germans were bombing the dykes, we switched to amphibious crafts and were trained up on them and helped to carry Canadian troops and supplies. On 29th April, 1945 we took the troops over the River Elbe (near Hamburg) and entered Hamburg on 2nd May, 1945. Montgomery signed surrender terms for that region on 4th May, 1945.
I met Monty and Churchill and was told 鈥渨ell done.鈥 Monty joked with me to ask Churchill for a cigar!!!
