Living in Mitcham, Surrey, I was evacuated twice during the war, the second time being in early 1944 when the flying bombs (doodle bugs) began to fall on London. However, as a 10-year old, I decided that I would prefer to be home for Christmas 1944 despite the continuing raids on London. So, alone except for my twin brother, I took a train from St Asaph to London, changing at Crewe. Most of the other passengers on the trains were in uniform. Arriving in London, I took the Underground train. As I passed through the stations, I saw many people sleeping on the platforms, the V2 rockets having started to arrive.
My father was serving in the RAF and I had not seen him since 1940. He arrived, home after VJ day. But military service did not end there in my family. The Nationalists in Malaya turned on the British at the end of WWII. In 1953 I was called up into the RAF and was posted to Malaya in 1954, serving there and at RAF Changi until 1956. It should be remembered that many British troops have died in campaigns since the end of the Second World War, many in Malaya. Wars do not end wars!
