My abiding memory is passing the gas works on Dewsbury Road,when the sirens sounded terrifyingly loud,so close. My father had just died and was in fact lying in our house in his coffin, as was the procedure in those days.It was a dreadful time. The other thing I recall was the Direction of Labour and not being able to choose where one worked. At the time I worked at an undertakers furnishers,coffins,shrouds the lot.I remember having to fire watch on a building with four floors,on Sunday my only day off,at sixteen. Ive often wondered what earthly use I would have been, not a lot I suspect.
