Wendy was born in Hull in 1940and lived with her mum and grandma. Her father was killed in action just a couple of months before she was born and so Wendy has never known her true father. Living in Hull during the war was very dangerous as it was a docking town and so was bombed regularly. Wendy and her mum and grandma were bombed out of 3 houses and by the end of the war were living in a government built prefab. This lasted Wendy's mum until her death in the late 1970s.
Wendy was never evacuated like a lot of other children and so remembers air raids at school as well as home. Her clearest memory was of one particular trip to the cinema. Her grandma had taken her to give her mother a break and during the film the siren went off. Her Grandma picked Wendy up and carried her out the cinema and down the road to the community air raid shelter that they used. On the way they met Wendy's mother running to meet them. She picked Wendy up and ran with her the rest of the way. It was very close and a couple of bombs landed just behind them hitting neighbouring buildings.
My Granny has fond memories as well as not so good ones and some that just make her laugh looking back on them. She doesn't hate the Germans and doesn't hold anything against them.
