Being shipped from Beckenham in late 1940 and sent to
My parents thought this would be a safe area but suddenly hearing ther rattle of machine gun fire, I dived under a tracktion engine to take cover, being the tail end Charlie of a group of school children. Fortunately nobody was hurt. The bomber aircraft went over and I could see the air gunner quite clearly from the ground [approx. 60' above].
Later we were moved to Largs in Scotland only to find we were close to an army commando unit who used to go by to train in the mountains.
When they left to go to Norway, I was moved to Leeds where we were locked out of the house until tea time! Fortunately this was only a short stay. After this we were moved back to London in aproximately 1943/44.
After dodging the V1's and V2's, I took my time going to school and thge tram that I should have been on was completely destroyed!
