I was born in 1932, so I was about 7 years old when the War began.
In 1945 we had Italian Prisoners working at Carsella Farm - they came along each day to do ditching round the fields. I got on very well with them despite the language barrier.
.
They were staying at Whitecross and most days I would ride back with them on the transport and then walk back. I remember that they had their own chef.
I recall that we had some British Commandos staying on the farm. We had just been shearing the sheep and there were lots of bags of wool - they thought that they made wonderful soft beds.
One of the Officers used to practice with his revolver- he would put a penny on the door and fire at it. One day we wanted a chicken for dinner - he shot it with one bullet - he certainly was a good shot.
We also had the Home Guard and the Red Cross
