I was 17 when I started work at Devonport Dockyard. I was a messenger for the foreman and wasn鈥檛 old enough to use the machines until I was 18. So I had to sweep the floors with a massive broom. I didn鈥檛 like it because all the apprentice boys watched me and I was so embarrassed, I cried every night and then when I left I cried because I didn鈥檛 want to leave.
I volunteered to be an overhead traveller Driver, operating from the roof of the shop transferring goods by crane from one end to the other. I had to climb 40 feet up a straight ladder. The only time I was scared was when the crane conked out and I had to walk the girders with another man. I could have fallen at any time but Joe Scoble looked after me. What a job for a lady but I loved it.
