At the end of our garden there was an army camp with 4 naval guns which used to protect us from enemy planes. They'd go off every time the Germans flew over
Instead of a shelter my dad fixed a table under the window and put a mattress underneath. We all slept there like sardines, every night. Every time there was a bang, the cat would join us. The cat would also follow us to the cinema and wait for us outside, shells going off all around.
We had to register for war work at 16 but I never got to join the forces as I was too young. I was most indignant.
I remember the search lights from the two camps used to meet in the sky and criss-cross.
shells would take tiles off the roof. next doors toilet 'went for a burton' (disappeared) with one blast.
There was always a dance or a concert going off somewhere.
