My father was in the Royal Navy and a Gunner on the frigates during the war, so we didn't see very much of him. In fact I was eight months old when he first saw me and I was in the Royal Eye Infirmary with measles (as a precaution they used to watch for any eye damage caused by the disease and put the patient in a dimly lit room).
We had American soldiers stationed at St Cleer and as young children they would give us candy and tins of fruit to bring home. They also would give us rides on their ammunition trucks, which was like a mini railway line from the top of St Cleer downs to the bottom where the ammunition store was kept!"
