I originally served as a Gunner with the Royal Artillelry. As Radar was in its early days because of my technical qualification I was sent to the Military College of Science on a "crash" course for 3 weeks. I was made up to Sgt. and joined the R.E.M.E.
My first job was to change the Carbons in the Paraboloid of a searchlight. It was at a village called Balby near Hull docks which were very heavily bombed by the Germans. Whilst I was inside the Paraboloid of the serchlight the German fighter pilots used to dive down the beam in an effort to crash the unit. Fortunately on this occasion I was missed. A very dangerous job I had to fo on two or three different radar sites. I was then assigned to join a ship sailing from Hull dock to service the Radar equipment on board. We went as far as the Mediterranean then landed to join Montgomeries forces. I then got the North Africa Star.
