I remember when the war started and our next door neighbour Minnie panicking about the blackout.

The first time we heard a siren we all raced into the downstairs passage with our gasmasks where we stood and waited and waited for ages and ages for something to happen. Eventually we all went back to bed and found out later that what we鈥檇 heard had been the all clear!

People used to say 鈥淚t鈥檒l be over by Christmas鈥 and 鈥淒on鈥檛 worry the Germans have got wooden tanks.鈥

Of course it was all very na茂ve. In the spring of 1940, around May/June I remember my dad saying 鈥渨e鈥檙e in trouble now鈥 after the collapse of France just before Dunkirk .
