Pat O’Brien from Whitehaven, Cumberland (left) and an Iraqi friend in Baghdad, 1944. [Photograph from personal collection of Pat O’Brien]
Introduction
This article has been submitted on behalf of Pat O’Brien from Whitehaven, Cumbria (previously Cumberland). During World War Two, Pat served in different Battalions of the Border Regiment, the ‘Sherwood Foresters’ and then immediately after the war in the 14th/20th King’s Royal Hussars.
Pat, his family, and the author have read and understood the terms of the ´óÏó´«Ã½ «People’s War» website.
Pat has many adventures
While he was in the army, Pat visited many countries and had many adventures. He was involved in the Dunkirk evacuation, the Middle East and North African Campaigns, Sicily, Italy and Greece. Although he has rarely spoken to his family about his experiences, Pat does have some photographs that bring back memories of some of the happier moments he shared with his many Army pals.
For a while in 1944, Pat was in Baghdad, Iraq where the photograph that goes with this photograph was taken. On the back of the photograph, Pat has written the location and when it was taken, but unfortunately not the name of his Iraqi friend shown with him.
Conclusion
Later in 1944, Pat moved on from Iraq and to Athens, Greece, where he met Angelina Marcoulatou, whom he married in December 1945. After finally leaving the Army in 1947, Pat settled down to married life with Angelina in his hometown of Whitehaven, Cumberland (now Cumbria). In December 2005, Pat and Angelina celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary.
