My grandfather was was an Aircraft Engine Fitter and became a Leading Aircraftman, his number was 1019591 Rodgers.
In 1940 he went to West Kirby to sign up, then on to the aircraft base at Innsworth Lane in Gloucester.
He was then posted to Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire then back to Innsworth lane to do a Fitters course.
Next back to Cambridgeshire, Alconbury Hill this time to work on Short Stirling bombers (he's still got a soft spot for them!)
He was then posted back to Yorkshire and served at the following bases:
Elvington
Topcliffe
Leeming
Shipton
before being sent from Liverpool on a nightmare 2 week journey to Egypt in Sept 1942 to be sent on
to Habbaniya in Iraq where he saw out the war, catching malaria in the process (and naturally getting his photo taken next to the Baghdad - London sign!)
They both experienced the bombing raid on York on 29th April (he was on leave for his birthday - it turned out to be a memorable one!)
I anyone thinks that they may have any information relating to the above places or thinks they may have known him we'd be really pleased if you'd get in touch.
My grandmother took over their grocery delivery business round the villages to the east of York -

Hi Rodgers Family

You mention Waterbeach in Cambridge in your account - from March 1941 until Feb 1942, this was the operational station of 99 Squadron RAF, flying the Vickers Wellington bomber.

Have you tried getting your grandfather's Service Record from RAF Innsworth in Gloucester?

Kind regards

Thanks very much for letting us know about RAF Innsworth having service records, and for letting us know the Squadron - my grandfather tells me that he was moved from squadron to squadron and he can't remember their numbers so this'll be a great help.
The funny thing is he's got his brothers full service records from serving on HMS Ark Royal and Barham but not his own!
I know that he has at least one black mark against his name - he was on leave from RAF Innsworth and couldn't bear to leave Elsie so went AWOL for a couple more days with her.He handed himself over to the military police back at Innsworth who promptly locked him up for a few days! We all think its very sweet that he got a criminal record for being so in love with Nana!

Thanks again for your help,

Hi again

If you need an address for RAF Personnel at Innsworth, let me know. If your grandfather is still alive, he can request the record himself, or give written permission for a family member to access it. It will fill in most of the gaps and tell you which Squadrons he served with.

If he was at Waterbeach between those two dates, he will have been a contemporary of my late father, who was (then) a Corporal, Engine Fitter.

In due course, if you need to know anything about 99 Squadron, please feel free to contact me again.

Kind regards
