My grandfather was was an Aircraft Engine Fitter and became a Leading Aircraftman, his number was 1019591 Rodgers.
In 1940 he went to West Kirby to sign up, then on to the aircraft base at Innsworth Lane in Gloucester.
He was then posted to Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire then back to Innsworth lane to do a Fitters course.
Next back to Cambridgeshire, Alconbury Hill this time to work on Short Stirling bombers (he's still got a soft spot for them!)
He was then posted back to Yorkshire and served at the following bases:
Elvington
Topcliffe
Leeming
Shipton
before being sent from Liverpool on a nightmare 2 week journey to Egypt in Sept 1942 to be sent on
to Habbaniya in Iraq where he saw out the war, catching malaria in the process (and naturally getting his photo taken next to the Baghdad - London sign!)
They both experienced the bombing raid on York on 29th April (he was on leave for his birthday - it turned out to be a memorable one!)
