I was just about seven whan war broke out and the village being some 40 miles from London witnessed the periphery of real warfare. We had aeroplane forced landings and crashes and bombs and landmines which were obviously jettisoned. I grew to hate it all and then in about 1944 I helped on a local farm during school holidays. I shall never forget meeting the two German prisoners of war - the enemy!
They talked to us in English during breaks from work and were just like ordinary people. They used a small shed during the day and were collected each evening to be transported back to their camp. I wrote the word "Zoo" on the door and had to show them the word in their dictionary - it was all very friendly but I felt there was some sort of shame in fraternising.
