Rushing home to tell my parents that we were at war with Germany - it had little effect as they already had heard the 大象传媒 programme too, and were very much occupied putting up black-out curtains, taping windows against broken glass. etc. My Dad enrolled in the LDV later the Home Guard, and was out some nights guarding the railway bridge with fake guns, and firewatching in the Church tower, with buckets of water!
At the railway station many different tragedies were taking place. The greatest of these was watching the poor exhausted troops arriving back from Dunkirk. They were tired, bloodied, bruised and hungry - and wondering what had happened to themselves. The WVS ladies and Red Cross were trying to aid them in whatever way they could.
Following this case a little group of 50 or so evacuees all labelled and with gas masks slung across their shoulders, wondering where they were going.
That was how we came to have Noel, a cheeky little 4 year old who was being evacuated with his brother Joseph . He had spent a greater part of his little life riding on the underground with his siblings, and had never seen any farm animals, green fields, or even tasted gravy - fish and chips was his staple diet.
He remained with us until his Mother wanted him to go home as she missed him - and we missed him too when he went.
Our next move was to go and live in Surrey
