In my little area there were no playgrounds...this is Mayville Road in Leytonstone. Of course we could play in the school playground, but not after the end of the school day.

We were bombed twice in the war: one bomb in Mayville Road, about 100 yards down the street from No 32 where I lived with my Mum and Gran. The other bomb was in Granleigh Road, close to Leytonstone railway station.

I have the clearest memory of walking about on top of the rubble of the Granleigh Road bombsite, looking for souvenirs and laughing at the fun of this adventure. I was about 5.

A few years ago I saw a film called 'Hope and Glory' (?) and this captured well the excitement of the playgrounds we created from bombsites. You cannot beat a cockney.
