My Grandfather Ronald was appointed an Executive Officer in the Inland Revenue at Somerset House.Upon the outbreak of war he was evacuated with his department to North Wales. There he joined the Home Guard, but despite his work being of national importance, which would have secured excemption from service, he volunteered to join the RAF.He joined in 1941, trained in Scotland and obtained the rank of Sergeant-Observer. He had only just obtained his 'wings' and had not fully completed his operational training when he was selected to take part in the second 1000 bomber raid on Bremen on the night of 25/26th June 1942 from which he failed to return . He
flew in a Wellington and was based at RAF Pershore at Throckmorton,Worcestershire('Crafty tricks of the war'-the recent 大象传媒2 programme was filmed here).

My grandmother was 5 months pregnant with my father when Ronald went missing. In the January of 1943 it was finally learnt that he and the rest of the crew had been shot down on the return journey from Breman. He is buried in a small village cemetary in Holland.
My Grandmother always kept detailed diaries and it was obviously incrediably moving to read about this period of time in her life. She also kept in contact, up until her death, with some people from the Dutch village who had witnessed the crash and who had subsequently maintained their graves.

Message 1 - Thousand Bomber Raids

Posted on: 28 February 2004 by Frank Mee Researcher 241911

Hello Louise,
Your Grandfather Ronald must have felt that being part of the war effort meant being up front. Many people who had vital jobs volunteered for the forces and lots of them were told to go back to their war jobs as they were needed there.
Those first thousand Bomber raids came after much wrangling in the Air Command and finally Air Marshall Harris decided that putting more planes in the air would cut losses.
1000 Bomber raids were made on Cologne, Essen and Bremen during May -June 1942 the losses were only 3-5% on those raids. Think of that word "only" as it meant 30-50 planes with full crews did not make it back home, a lot of men.
In those early raids anything that would fly was sent out. Our area in the North East of England was one large Airbase and we saw some of the ancient machines that staggered into the air they were not all Halifax and Stirling Bombers but they made the numbers up.
Those men set off from a normal day into a crazy world of night bombing with inefficient instruments and flew by dead reckoning out and back. They were very brave men and never got the recognition they deserved. We who were around remember them and you are proud of your Grandfather so he is still alive in your thoughts. Tell his story with pride and that makes it all worth it in the end.
Regards Frank.
